Anders Petersen is known for taking black-and-white photographs that are both intimate and personal. This photographic essay was carried out in the Chilean city of Valparaiso in August 2014, during Petersens residency for the International Festival of Photography in Valparaiso. Roaming the streets and hills of the port city, he documents its everyday scenes and portrays its inhabitants — from children and women, to dogs and pelicans — in his signature direct and confrontational manner. The citys labyrinth of cobbled alleys and graffiti-splashed buildings comes alive through Petersens images; the sights, sounds, and smells of a bustling coastal metropolis are tangible.
