With Flags of America, the Fondazione Fotografia adds a major new chapter, dedicated to twentieth-century American photography, to the international collection of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena.
With images mainly shot between the end of World War II and the 1970s, the works featured in this volume outline a period of great cultural ferment in which the USA, having established its position as a major economic power and a cultural model, also witnessed the growth of internal criticism and protest, drawing on the ideas of the countercultures, anti-war and pro-Afro-American rights movements, also marked by a growing environmental awareness.
But the real protagonist of Flags of America is photography, which not only shows itself to be an effective tool for the analysis and interpretation of the world around us, but also a language which in that period was continually questioned and renewed, thus giving life to major new lines of research—from documentary photography to more intimate and even spiritual practices. And it is for this reason that the artists featured in this volume were and continue to be real flags of international photography: points of reference for their own generation as well as outright masters for those who have followed in their footsteps.
The prestigious new volume by Skira devoted to international contemporary photography is focused on some of the greatest American masters of the twentieth-century. This will be the first of two books (with the second coming in 2014) that seek to illustrate the outstanding quality and variety of the works which have marked American photography from the mid-twentieth-century to the present day. This first volume presents a detailed and annotated selection of works executed between the 1940s and 1970s by twenty photographers of undisputed importance from Edward Weston and Robert Adams to Minor White and Garry Winogrand, from Lee Friedlander down to Stephen Shore — whose pursuits represent benchmarks in the history of contemporary photography. As in the case of other titles in the series, the reproductions of all the works are accompanied by a critical apparatus with texts discussing the area, artists, and research explored
